PNE Vancouver

The Pacific National Exhibition is an annual 17 day summer fair in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It usually begins in mid-to-late August, and ends in early September. The exhibition has been held in Hastings Park since it first took place in 1910.

The biggest attractions of the two-week fair are its numerous shops, stalls, performances, a nightly fireworks show, and the PNE Prize Home. The highest attendance the fair has recorded was 1.1 million in 1986.

Many significant events in the history of this province occurred during the annual Fair at the PNE. Throughout the Fair's long life numerous technological firsts debuted at the PNE, including the first rotary telephone in the Pacific Northwest, and aircraft and rocketry displays.

Many of today's largest consumer shows got their start as a part of the annual Fair including: the Vancouver Boat Show, the BC Home Show and the Pacific International Auto Show, which all began as displays at the PNE.

Over the past decade, the PNE has evolved from its role as an industry showcase into a centre for entertainment and family fun.

The PNE is a non-profit registered charity owned by the City of Vancouver and today remains the epicentre of events that entertain and shape the experience of our city and residents.

Every year, guests enjoy a wide range of experiences that emulate the diversity of our city.

The PNE hosts millions of guests annually at concerts, sporting events, community festivals, cultural activities, Playland amusement park and, of course, the annual summer Fair at the PNE – the longest-running and best-attended event in British Columbia. The PNE is proud to set the standard for family entertainment in BC and to serve as Vancouver’s main source of agricultural education and exhibits for over 90 years.

In addition to the events hosted on-site, the PNE also actively encourages public access to, and use of, the beautiful Hastings Park site throughout the year for walking, jogging, family picnics, riding a bike or walking the dog.

Other than the fair, Hastings Park is also the home of Playland, a horse racetrack (which also bears the name Hastings Park), the Pacific Coliseum (an ice hockey arena), the PNE Forum, and the PNE Agrodome. It was formerly the site of Empire Stadium, which has been demolished and replaced with a public soccer field. It is also the location of Hastings Skatepark, a skateboard bowl located to the south of the Pacific Coliseum.

The PNE has played an important role in the history of Vancouver. From its beginnings as a showcase for the region's agriculture and economy, it has grown immensely. This growth has resulted in many questions about the fair's future at Hastings Park. Beginning in 1997, the city has restored a large portion of the park. Many old fair buildings have been demolished and replaced by a more natural character. Although land was purchased in Surrey that was to become the fair's new home, it remains at Hastings Park for the foreseeable future.

When at the peak, this Vancouver hike will offer an incomparable view of Greater Vancouver. Along the way, there is the Refuge for Endangered Wildlife, where one can see grizzly bears and other animals. Vancouver is fast becoming a foodie capital, and many local chefs are receiving international acclaim. The thing I love the most about this part of the world is the amazing variety of organic produce that is available. Vancouver's original Chinatown has a similar market, but seems past its heyday as far as eating out goes. Oddly, one of its best restaurants is Phnom Penh , which serves Cambodian and Vietnamese food, including crispy frogs' legs.
